Created and sponsored by Nestle Waters/Poland Spring Maine Brookie Buddies is a program to assist children in creating awareness of water quality through raising of brook trout in classroom aquariums. Between January and June, participating students raise brook trout from the egg stage to the fry stage in classrooms and then release the fish into a local, state-approved body of water.
During the week of March 22nd a writing exercise is provided to the students asking the students to reflect on what they have learned or are learning, and describe what World Water Day means to them.
Throughout the Brookie Buddies program students are guided through a series of activities including such themes as point and non-point source pollution, water cycle and watersheds, fish habitat, anatomy and much more. The tank setup and equipment, expertise, field trip and fish are provided at no cost to the schools. Since 2007 more than 2400 Maine grade school students have participated in the Brookie Buddies program.
