My Environment is mine Initiative (me.mi, pronounce me my) celebrates and fostered a public awareness to commemorate the World Water Day, Thursday March 22nd, 2018 with a symposium under the flagship of this year’s theme “Nature For Water” in accordance with the United Nations Water’s (UN Water) objective to promote the Sustainable Development Goals 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation.

The commemoration took place at the American Corner Hall of the Murtala Muhammad State Library, Ahmadu Bello Way, Kano, Nigeria with a massive turn-out of participants in attendance who graced the event to support the essence and importance of achieving clean, healthy and sustainable water for all by 2030.

The symposium was enriched with the presentation from the guest speaker; Dr Salisu Dan’azumi, former Head of Department and an Associate Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Bayero University Kano on the topic of the day; Nature for Water. The focal point of his presentation was on Nature for Water treatment; exploring the natural methodologies like swale, water catchment, wetland, natural sand beddings, natural stone (alum) and so on in water treatment to recharge groundwater, reduce storm water pollution and put on a decline the amount of untreated effluent (water) that is discharged to other water reserves. These natural water treatment methods have the potential to improve the water demand, water quality and water availability in Kano state.

Hussein Orekoya, Founder, My Environment is Mine Initiative (me.mi) and other team leaders of different Community Development Service group such as; Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), ENACTUS, Bayero University, Kano and the National Agency for Food, Drugs and Control (NAFDAC) also made presentations on, and around the Sustainable Development Goal 6; Clean Water and Sanitation with an encouragement to participants to support the goals by taking tangible actions in achieving the global goals for 2030.

Participants were very happy and delighted with much joy on their faces for bringing such an international-standard program closer to them. They commended the effort of My Environment is Mine Initiative team (#Team_me.mi) for doing a great work in promoting clean, healthy and sustainable environment with series of activities and enlightenment programs, in advocating and creating environmental awareness within the state.

The World Water Day encourages everybody to become part of the movement in achieving clean water and sanitation as it promotes sustainable development of our environment.
