UN Environment GEMS/Water Capacity Development Centre (CDC) is proud to be organizing this year’s UCC World Water Day. The events of the day will also be a part of Cork City’s 15th annual Lifelong Learning Festival.
On March 22, students are encouraged to “turn UCC blue” to raise awareness around World Water Day. To accompany this, the UCC quadrangle will be lit up with blue lights so that we quite literally turn UCC blue!
The morning of UCC’s World Water Day will kick off at 11 AM with the opening of our Water Footprint Booth. Here, students can play water footprint guessing games and win prizes! They can also determine their own water footprint and add it to a display. This interactive booth will be run with the help of UCC’s Environmental Society
Around lunchtime, Cork Nature Network will hold a River Biodiversity Walk to teach people about nature in the River Lee that surrounds UCC’s beautiful campus. This Biodiversity walk will highlight this year’s World Water Day theme.
After our River Biodiversity walk, there will be a mini water quality monitoring demonstration next to UCC’s Student Centre. This interactive workshop will give students the chance to see what water quality monitoring is all about, and to learn more about activities of UN Environment GEMS/Water CDC.
On March 22, we will be announcing our World Water Day photo contest winners. GEMS/Water CDC will be running the contest for UCC students through our twitter (@GemsWaterCDC), and it will focus on this year’s theme “the answer is in nature.”
The day will finish up with a lecture from UCC’s, Dr Simon Harrison, who researches the ecology of freshwater systems. The talk will be from 6:30-7:30 PM in Boole 1 on UCC’s main campus.
